This Moment is What We’ve Got

“Treat every moment as your last. It is not preparation for something else.”
Shunryu Suzuki

One way to practice mindfulness is to notice how much you crave something else. This can transpire in many ways. For example, you can be constantly wishing the past was different than what it was. Or, you can be secretly thirsting for some future to transpire. If all you do is ping-pong back and forth between wanting the past to be different and fantasizing about the future to work out precisely as you have planned, you are stepping over the moment right in front of you; you are literally out of focus. You keep this up long enough, and you’ll miss the whole thing.
